In celebration of World Water Day, MVP Tech launched a joint initiative in 2021 with Surge, a US-based nonprofit organization that invests in communities through safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions. This project aimed to deliver sanitation infrastructure and hygiene education to 2000 people from at-risk communities in Haiti and Uganda.
Together with Surge, we believe in empowering at-risk communities by helping them become the owners of their own transformation rather than beneficiaries of aid. These communities can learn to become self-sustaining when we invest in delivering critical hygiene education and sanitary infrastructure.
The officially launched in April 2021, where we reached and positively impacted 314 people in Uganda by the end of May. Local program officers delivered educational material and proper hygiene training to Oweria A and B, Angalkewru, Kalyamese, Abirabira A & B, Ajikdak A Schools, and Opurai Village.
Throughout June and July, our efforts reached 351 additional students in four new communities. Kalaki Secondary, Otil, Kakado, and Apili. Bringing us to 43% of the way towards our goal.
In August and September, 965 people and seven new communities received critical sanitation infrastructure and hygiene training.
“The girls learned about personal hygiene to avoid diseases and were happy to be encouraged and supported to stay in school to achieve their future dreams.
– Apio Sarah, Trainer
As the initiative approached its completion, Uganda experienced unprecedented Covid-19 infection rates. We bolstered our efforts and managed to successfully train 725 people across 13 communities in WASH programs in October. By November, It became difficult to reach at-risk communities as the country went into lockdowns and schools temporarily closed.
However, we were committed to completing our objective of helping 2000 people So we looked for others we can reach and help. We decided to take our initiative to Haiti which had a significant part of its population lacking access to sanitary infrastructure and hygiene education. The WASH programs were delivered to 122 people in Haiti from three at-risk communities.
MVP Tech and Surge joint initiative created a long-lasting impact for a total of 2,003 people (1,881 people in Uganda, 122 people in Haiti), and forty-three communities across both countries. We successfully completed our initiative to deliver sanitation infrastructure and hygiene education to at-risk communities in Uganda & Haiti.
As part of our CSR and commitment towards supporting communities, we look forward to continuing our work with Surge for water, to support more communities with Hygiene Education and deployment of different water sanitations projects for those who need it the most.
